Common Morel - Morchella esculenta

Description

The hollow conical or egg-shaped cap of this species is deeply pitted, rather like an irregular honeycomb. Within the pits the surface varies from pale brown to grey and darkens with age.

On rich, well-drained soil especially if lime rich and often under trees or beneath hedges.

When to see it

Fruits from March to May and is a popular edible fungus

UK Status

It has a widespread distribution in Britain but is never really common

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland.
