Demon Shrimp - Dikerogammarus haemobaphes
Up to 18 mm long. All Gammarus species require detailed examination for a safe id.
Freshwater habitats, including rivers, canals and reservoirs.
All year round.
The presence of this non-native species may result in marked ecological change, leading to decreased diversity in the invaded range by competing with or preying upon a broad range of invertebrates.
First recorded in Britain in 2012, but widespread distribution across Midlands and Thames Valley suggests it had been present for some time previously.
Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
