Nysius huttoni

Alternative names
Wheat Bug
Description

Length 3 to 4 mm. Sometimes known as the Wheat Bug, and known for damaging crops in its native New Zealand. The adults have a variegated outline with a conspicuous silvery triangle at the posterior end. The bug is distinguished from the six species of Nysius native to Britain by its conspicuous pubescence (hairiness). It has long erect hairs covering the pronotum, scutellum, clavus and corium and a distinctive double row of punctures along the claval suture.

Identification difficulty
ID checklist (your specimen should have all of these features)

Detailed examination of the specimen is needed to identify the species (a photograph alone is not normally sufficient because key features are too small or hidden).

Recording advice

Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.

Habitat

A polyphagous pest of a large number of weeds and crops. It is reported to favour habitats with sandy soil. The species has a wide host range, though it typically feeds on weed sap in wild habitats. Notable cultivated hosts in include wheat (Triticum aestivum), oats (Avena sativa), barley (Hordeum vulgare), Brassicas, certain grass and clover species. There have been no recorded economic impacts of this species in Europe to date. In New Zealand it is considered an economically important pest of wheat and Mustard crops (Brassica) in particularly dry years.

When to see it

Occurs all year round, but most likely to be encountered in the warmer months of the year. Adults overwinter in sites such as mosses, leaf litter, under stones and bark.

UK Status

A recent arrival (circa 2007) in Britain from the near continent, but actually native to New Zealand.
