I wonder if I could ask about the procedure for new sites to be added to the wild places list?

I have recently come across a couple of places which I really value as sites for nature but also because of their unspoilt and naturally beautiful environment.

1) 'Oadby Nature Reserve'.  Situated at the top end of Florence Wragg Way in Oadby (Grid Ref: SK641000) and beyond the Fludes Lane corridor which is listed.  There is scrub woodland there but the outstanding feature is the pool, fairly large with reedbeds and birdlife and wildflowers.  Among the former: tufted duck, dabchick, moorhen and swallows among the latter: cowslips.

2) Old railway cutting north of Slawston Road between Slawston and Medbourne. (Grid Ref: SP78689381).  This was part of the Great Northern and London, Midland, Scottish Joint line between Hallaton Junction and Welham Junction.  To the south of the bridge the cutting is dry and open but to the north the sides are steeper and covered with scrub.  I don't know how much water is retained in the summer but this April the cutting floor was flooded, there were drifts of marsh marigold and a moorhen paddling around.  It seemed really magical to me.  The bridge is also interesting with wall rue and black spleenwort growing in the mortar.  As far as I can see from the satellite image the woodland and wetland habitat doesn't extend much past 100m to the north.

It would be nice to share them more widely with the Naturespot community.

We are always open to suggestions for adding new Wild Places and both your proposals sound worthwhile. The biggest challenge is usually identifying the site boundary. Some are obvious but many are unclear. We already have a Wild Place set up for 'Flude's Lane' in Oadby as you know and this may be part of the Oadby Nature Reserve. If so we can extend the boundary to include the pool and the rest of the site. If you can help clarify this then please email me: dnicholls@naturespot.org.uk

Similarly, it would help if we can liaise regarding the extent of the railway cutting which is accessible to the public. Get in touch and we can take it from there.
