Jersey Cudweed

Jersey Cudweed has just arrived in Leicester. Keep your eyes open, it may be coming to your local pavement soon. More...

Jersey Cudweed, Laphangium luteoalbum, is a national rarity that nevertheless is spreading northwards. This species is probably an ancient introduction in the UK but became almost extinct. However, in recent years it has appeared with startling regularity as a pavement weed in many parts of the UK, and has now turned up on Leicester pavements.

Its closest relative is Common Cudweed (Filago vulgaris) but that speices has dense woolly hairs all the way to the top. Jersey Cudweed is densely hairy, but not woolly. It may have some woolly hairs on the midline, but not all round and fluffy like Common Cudweed. Keep your eyes on the pavements and send up your records.
