Large Nutmeg - Apamea anceps

Wingspan 35-40 mm. Fairly distinctive, with light ochreous forewing often longer and narrower than in other Apamea species.

Inhabiting dry pasture and woodland fringes.

Adults fly in June and July and are attracted to light and sugar.

The larvae feed on grasses, including Annual Meadow-grass and Cock's-foot eating the flowers and leaves.

Distributed throughout much of England, though most common in the south-east. It is local or rare towards northern England and Wales. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

Fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire & Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant)
