Sitona sulcifrons

Description

Length 3 to 4 mm. this is a plain brown weevil with a short rostrum (snout).

Similar Species

Other Sitonia species. Dissection is necessary to distinguish between them.

Habitat

In fields containing clovers, and on crops such as Lucerne and Alfalfa.

When to see it

All year but peaking in spring and summer.

Life History

Associated with clovers, the larvae feeding on the root nodules. There is one generation per year, the adults living for about 12 months.

Fairly frequent and widespread in England and Wales.
